GSG Activities
GSG sponsors many activities for new and continuing graduate students to enrich their professional and personal life at Michigan Tech through community-building activities. Please see our calendar for individual dates and times of events below.
Fall Orientation Picnic
GSG assists with the Fall Orientation for Graduate Students and also sponsors the Michigan Tech Orientation Picnic, typically held at Hancock Beach. This has proven to be one the best ways for established students to get to know incoming students and help them in making a productive transition to Michigan Tech.
Quincy Mine Tour
GSG proudly hosts an Annual Tour of the historic Quincy Mine, held on the day following the orientation picnic. Transportation to the mine is available from the MUB and admission is completely free; however, you'll definitely want to bring a jacket...it's cold underground!
Co-ed Softball League
GSG sponsors a co-ed Graduate-student Softball League. Over a third of all graduate students from across campus participate every summer, forming departmental and often intra-departmental teams. GSG softball has proven one of the best ways for graduate students to build community, as most teams accept members from other departments with whom they have built strong relationships through other GSG, personal and professional events.
Socials
Monthly, GSG sponsors a series of Fall and Spring Social Events. GSG provides food and beverages and organizes and staffs these events, which offer nice opportunities for graduate students to involve their families in building a rich graduate student community.
Fall Color Tour Aboard the Queen
The Fall Color Tour showcases the majesty of Fall in the Keweenaw with an relaxing cruise through the Keweenaw. Like the Orientation picnic, it offers a great space for new students to realize the value of meeting and learning about the personal and professional lives of graduate students from other departments, disciplines, nations and cultures.
Research Colloquium Poster & Presentation Competition
GSG sponsors the Graduate Research Colloquium each year to showcase the important and interesting research done by Mighigan Tech's graduate students through a poster and presentation competition. Graduate students give presentations and/or display research posters explaining their work. A panel of Michigan Tech professors selects the best contributions.
Outstanding Merit Awards
Each spring, GSG sponsors three Outstanding Merit Awards. Categories of Outstanding Student Scholar, Outstanding Student Leader, and Outstanding Graduate Mentor are selected by the GSG Executive Board and presented to recipients at the Graduate Research Colloquium banquet.
Lunch and Learn Lecture Series
As part of an ongoing lecture series, GSG sponsors the Lunch-n-learn Series—seminars and talks on a variety of subjects. One very successful lecture each year has been Applying for an NSF Grant, and other fellowships for funding graduate school.
